Rachel Mayeri
Experimental Video 5:48 2007 Chicago Premiere

“A split screen juxtaposes field footage of baboons with a reenactment by human actors, shot in film noir style. A tale of lust, jealousy, sex, and violence transpires simultaneously in human and nonhuman worlds. Beastly males, instinctively attracted to a femme fatale, fight to win her, but most are doomed to fail. The story of sexual selection is presented across species, re-mapping the savannah to the urban jungle. Primatologist, Deborah Forster, who explains their behavior in voiceover, shot the raw field footage of olive baboons in Kenya.” – Rachel Mayeri

MANUELLE LABOR
Marie Losier & Guy Maddin
Experimental Video 13:00 2007 Chicago Premiere

“It's a little collaboration I did with Guy Maddin. We've known each other for a while now, and I've always made film portraits of different artists. So I asked Guy if I could film him, and he said: "No! I hate my face and I hate my voice." So I said: "OK, well, film your hands or your feet, and I'll do something with it." So he actually shot his hands on Super 8 film, and a year later he sent me the reel… I shot a film around them where I'm getting sick and pregnant and I'm giving birth to a pair of hands. And they're his hands.” – Marie Losier (from an interview with S.T. VanAirsdale, thereeler.com)
