“A video homage to Standish Lauder's experimental film Intolerance Abridged (1974), where every tenth frame of Intolerance is double-printed, reducing the running time from over two hours to 10 minutes. I have applied Lauder's process to “Survivor: Cook Islands,” a reality show that divides "tribes" competing for $1,000,000 by race. The result is a that the video plays back images at such a fast pace that there is little emotional resonance while the framing and representation of the cast members remain apparent. In this video, fourteen episodes are reduced to fourteen minutes and the structure of the video is divided into three parts coinciding with the contrived nature of the show: Part One: The tribes are divided by race: Asian, Latino, African American, and Caucasian. Part Two: The four tribes are integrated into two multi-ethnic groups. Part Three: The two tribes are merged and each individual cast member competes for the prize money. As time passes and losing members are "voted off the island" the imagery of the cast members becomes increasingly focused on the a few central characters and eventually the winning "survivor" determined in this video by the amount of screen time devoted to that individual.” – Jenny Stark
